Index of protection “IP”.

As everyone knows, when choosing equipment, and when determining where we will have to As everyone knows, when you choose the equipment, and when you need to determine where it will be installed, we must ensure that the degree of protection (IP index) of the device corresponds to the conditions directly to the conditions in which the equipment will be used in the future. Each electrical appliance must work by two protection requirements:

  • the first requirement is the provision of electrical safety for personnel who will directly service this equipment,
  • the second requirement is to protect all electronic components that are located in the device from the effects of the external environment.

All manufacturers of instruments, devices and other equipment that are intended for installation in buildings, usually apply a degree of protection to the body of the device, which corresponds to the international standard of International Protection, or simply called IP.

The IP Code, International Protection Marking, IEC standard 60529, sometimes interpreted as Ingress Protection Marking, classifies and rates the degree of protection provided against intrusion (body parts such as hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures. It is published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The equivalent European standard is EN 60529.

This regulation contains information about personnel protection who service equipment, whether in a private home or in production, from electric shock (current (minimum)), which senses the human body is approximately 5 mA, but from 10 mA it is already non-release current. Current of 30 mA can cause the paralysis of breathing. An irreversible process, such as slowing the heartbeat, in our body begins after a current from 50 mA. The most dangerous is the current more than 100mA, which can result in death or serious injuries with the direct work with the device. Also here we are talking about the degree of electronic components protection (located inside the device) from penetration of dust and moisture into the inwards.

The degree of protection and is also understood such a method of protection, which is verified by standard test methods, and also it is provided with a sheath that practically excludes the possibility of access to various dangerous parts of electrical equipment (dangerous current-carrying and mechanical parts), eliminates the entry of external solid objects / water into the internal part of the device.

This IP standard is universally recognized throughout the world. It is used much more often than the national standards. Therefore, when you choose a variety of equipment (whether it is electric motors, washing machines or just the light fixtures), it is necessary to pay attention not only to the appearance of the instruments, but also to the degree of its protection by IP.
IP protection standard is also popular in Ukraine. Virtually all documents, as well as on the cases of instruments of many firms in our country indicate the degree of protection. It is specified by special IP letters and two digits.

The Code breakdown is as follows:
– IPXX, the first position X contains numbers, or some symbol X if the degree is not defined. Also, two or more digits can be placed one or two letters. These letters provide the customer with additional supporting information. By the way, if you take a very ordinary household electrical outlet, then its protection degree can be IP22 – it means that:

  • it is protected from penetration of fingers,
  • it cannot be damaged vertically, or almost vertically, by dripping water.

Max protection which can be represented according to this classification – IP69:

  • a device that can withstand continuously immersion in the water under pressure,
  • Dustproof.

The decoding of the first two digits you can see below in the table.

The presence of an additional letter tells us about the degree of protection of the person / service personnel from access to especially dangerous parts. It is indicated in the case when:

  • The degree of protection against access to dangerous parts exceeds the protection level, which is indicated by the first digit of the IP code;
  • If it is indicate only the protection against water (its impact) , and the first digit in the code is replaced by the symbol “X”.

The additional letter “A” tells us that the body provides protection from access to especially dangerous / dangerous parts of the hand,
“B” – directly with your finger,
“C” -any tool,
“D” -any kind of wire.

In view of all the above, we give you our recommendations. When choosing different equipment, we recommend you to look at the product that you buy. It should not only have a good look, suit you at a price, but also fully comply with those climatic and technological parameters in order to ensure the correct, and the most carefree work of the device for you and equipment.
